Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central district in the National Assembly has backed the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on their strike.

It was reported that ASUU on Sunday announced the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike with immediate effect.

The decision was announced at the end of an emergency meeting on Sunday night.

This came just as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is also preparing to commence a nationwide strike on Tuesday, October 6th, 2018, over a disagreement between the organised labour and the government on the N30,000 minimum wage.

Speaking on the development, Sani in a post on his Twitter page, said the ASUU strike was a justifiable to save public universities in Nigeria.

The Kaduna lawmaker while taking a swipe at lawmakers with wards abroad, noted that Nigeria can afford to fund public universities adequately.

Sani wrote: “I share the belief that ASUU strike is a peaceful and justifiable action to save public universities in Nigeria.

“At 70$ per barrel,Nigeria can afford to adequately fund public universities.Elites in power who can afford to educate their wards abroad, should have some honour.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday addressed Nigerians as the country marked its 58th Independence anniversary.

In a speech broadcast across the nation, the President called for unity, while promising to ensure free and fair elections in 2019.

Among other things, the President hailed the military and security agencies for the progress made in tackling insecurity in the country and warned disruptive and corrosive forces on social media to desist from their acts or be prepared to face the law.

NATIONAL BROADCAST BY H.E MUHAMMADU BUHARI PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE 58TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY, 1ST OCTOBER, 2018

Fellow Nigerians,

Today is a day of celebration and solemn reflection. It is the anniversary of the day Nigerians realised one of the most cherished of human desires – the desire for freedom. We, therefore, give thanks to and remember our founding fathers who laboured so hard and sacrificed so much to build and bequeath to us this wonderful nation. It is our duty to consolidate this great legacy.

2. On this first October date and on the eve of the start of the general election cycle, we should do well to reflect on what binds us together and the great strength our diversity bestows on us. Ours is an ambitious nation, and, as citizens we have every right to look forward to the future with confidence and optimism which are well founded, considering where we find ourselves today.

3. There has been a steady improvement in the security situation in the North East. We remain committed to ending the crisis and make the North East safe for all.

4. Our thoughts and prayers are always with the victims of the Boko Haram’s atrocities and their families. Beyond that, we know that the goals of the Boko Haram terrorists include capturing territories, destroying our democracy and denying our children the right to education. We will not allow them to succeed.

5. I want at this point to pay tribute to the men and women of our armed forces, the Police and other security and law enforcement agencies, who have been working under the most difficult conditions to keep the country safe. In the process, many have made the supreme sacrifice.

6. As their Commander -In- Chief, I assure these our gallant men and women that I will continue to empower them by deepening their professionalism and providing all the necessary force multipliers and enablers required for them to prevail on the field. I am looking into all reported cases of inadequacies in relation to their entitlements, their welfare and those of their families.

7. We are diversifying away from reliance on oil to increased manufacturing capacity, solid minerals development, and agriculture.

8. Efforts are on course in the Niger Delta to clean up polluted lands, restore hopes of the youths in the region and re-establish livelihoods, and strengthen their capacity to guarantee for themselves and for our country a brighter future.

9. The age-long conflict between herders and farmers that was being exploited by those seeking to plant the seeds of discord and disunity amongst our people, is being addressed decisively. We will sustain and continue to support the commendable efforts by all including civil society organisations, local and states governments and our traditional and religious leaders in finding durable solution to this problem.

10. This being a transhumance issue, we are working with countries in our region that are also facing similar difficulties to complement our common efforts. In this context I must warn that the perpetrators of murder and general mayhem in the name of defending or protecting herders or farmers will face the full wrath of the law. Meanwhile, we urge all peace-loving Nigerians to reject any simplistic portrayal, at home or abroad, of this conflict as either religious or ethnic based.

11. We are one of the countries in the world most affected by environmental degradation, as a consequence of climate change. We are signatories to almost all conventions and agreements aimed at slowing down the effect of climate change and mitigating its now evident consequences.

12. The consequences on lives and livelihoods of the shrinking of the Lake Chad and the pollution caused by oil exploitation activities alone make it mandatory on us to be at the forefront of the struggle for a safer and more sustainable environment. We will continue to mobilise international support for our efforts in this regard.

13. We are making progress in the fight against corruption and recovery of stolen public funds and assets despite vicious and stiff resistance. The shameful past practice, of the brazen theft of billions of Naira is no more. Shady oil deals and public contracts that were never delivered have become things of the past.

14. Consequently, and this is very evident across the country, we have done more with less in infrastructural developments. Roads, railways, major bridges, schools, energy and power, air and sea ports, welfare of serving and retired personnel both civilian and military including payment of legacy debt such as pension arrears, have been attended to.

15. There is now an enabling environment for local and foreign investment in Nigeria. We are building a rules-based system – a level playing field that is free from fixers and intermediaries. This is the cornerstone to help genuine investors and honest consumers, and the platform that will allow for the real reforms that we intend to deliver over the coming years.

16. We are gradually strengthening the economy with a stable Naira and falling inflation rate. We are building an economy that is moving away from over reliance on oil. Consequently we have witnessed massive return to farms and seen bumper harvest, despite recurrent floods across the country.

17. These positive developments are the result of our collective pursuit of a common vision through hard work and dedication, after the missed opportunities and disappointments that followed the return to democracy in 1999.

18. At the forefront, have always been our youths. They have been at the vanguard of the struggle for independence. They fought in the war to keep the country united. And it was they who kept alive the struggle for democracy and human rights in our country at times when these were at risk, especially following the June 12th 1993 election and the historic 2015 election process.

19. Even today, our youths play a central role in Nigeria’s continuing progress and developments in all fields of our national endeavour –technology, agriculture, mining, engineering and especially the creative arts. Together we are building a more diverse, inclusive and self-reliant economy.

20. In the past three years we have introduced many policies and programmes targeted at youth development and youth empowerment. We support the ‘not too young to run’ legislation aimed at giving the youths greater say in our national politics and governance.

21. The school feeding program in primary schools is aimed at encouraging enrolment and attendance. We are building on what we have already introduced to support schools and universities to which funds have recently been released for upgrade of facilities, training programs for our entrepreneurs, and rehabilitation schemes for victims of terrorism and human trafficking.

Fellow Nigerians,

22. Now we have in our hands technology that is a powerful tool that we can and should use for knowledge and understanding. As with other countries, we must also learn how to manage those tendencies that, instead, look to abuse new technologies to provoke passions and stir tensions.

23. Never before have we faced such a challenge. We must all rise to the responsibility of shutting out those disruptive and corrosive forces that hide in today’s world of social media. We need critical minds and independent thinking, to question and question until we are satisfied we have the facts. Otherwise, all the progress we have made as a democracy since 1999 is at stake.

24. I have committed myself many times to ensure that elections are fully participatory, free and fair and that the Independent National Electoral Commission will be exactly INDEPENDENT and properly staffed and resourced. The ballot box is how we make our choice for the governments that rule in our name.

Fellow Nigerians,

25. Developing a thriving democracy is not an easy task. There can be no quick fixes or short cuts. These are the most important lessons that we have learnt in our 58 years as an independent nation.

26. At the international level, we remain a responsible and respected member of the international community, playing active positive roles within ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations as well as all other regional and international organisations and institutions of which we are members.

27. We will continue to support initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges of our times: global and regional crises and conflicts, terrorism, trans-border crime, climate change, human rights, gender equality, development, poverty and inequality within and between nations, etc. In this context, we are working hard to achieve both the AU 2063 Agenda for socio-economic transformation of our continent; and the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, which together aim at addressing these challenges

Fellow Nigerians,

28. As we celebrate the 58th Anniversary of our independence, we know we are on the right path. Although we have our differences, they count for far less than the values, virtues and common aspirations that unite us as a nation. We have so much for which we should be grateful, and in which we should rightly take pride. Our journey is not finished but we have come a long way.

29. I want to assure you that as President, I will continue to work tirelessly to promote, protect and preserve what really matters: a united, peaceful, prosperous and secure Nigeria, where all, irrespective of background, can aspire to succeed.

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has said he can still partake in the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

It was recently discovered that Shittu did not participate in the scheme, after graduating from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU), despite finishing school below the required minimum age of 30.

The Minister had defended the act, saying his first political post after graduation as a member of the Oyo state House of Assembly, could suffice as national service.

In an interview with Edumund Obilo, an Ibadan-based journalist, the minister said he is willing to join fresh graduates in the scheme “if it becomes necessary”.

Asked if he is willing to still serve, Shittu replied: “Of course I will go. It will be a pleasant thing to go, after I have been governor by the grace of God.”

Obilo asked him “what camp would you like to serve in?”, to which he responded: “Whichever camp. I will serve in any place if it becomes necessary for me to go. If it becomes necessary, I will.”

Shittu, however, insisted his political service supersedes participating in the mandatory scheme.

“The courts would have to decide whether serving in the house of assembly and being minister is not superior and does not replace service in the NYSC.

“I am not Kemi Adeosun because I didn’t have any forged certificate of exemption. She didn’t forge, she was a victim of circumstance,” he added.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, said on Saturday, identified money based politics as a major factor responsible for unprecedented corruption and bad governance in Nigeria.

The monarch, who doubles as the President-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), made the assertion at the 23rd Ummah Convention, organised by the Ummah Movement, in Abuja.

The theme of the convention was, “The Muslim Voice on Good Governance in Nigeria”, NAN reports.

He regretted that the nation’s political culture had deteriorated and become increasingly mercantile, where money becomes everything, saying “we cannot allow full reins to money politics and expect corruption to go away.

“This is partly responsible for bad governance that has characterised our polity, subverting our development, perpetrating poverty and eliciting the unending social conflicts.

“This money based politics will continue to fuel the unprecedented corruption we see in our society; as a result of these our pristine values as people have been supplanted and our future thrown into jeopardy.

“All leaders, political, spiritual and traditional need to come together to salvage our polity from dangers that the current political culture poses.

“The consequences of ignoring these standards are already showing and we must not wait until the bubbles busts,” Abubakar said.

The Sultan admonished leaders at all levels to take issues of leadership seriously, saying “we cannot ignore centuries old wisdom which places high premium on leadership and places criteria for shouldering responsibilities.”

He said that in Islam, leadership was fundamental and it was bestowed at every level as a trust from Allah and for which Allah would hold those entrusted to account.

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is adopting measures to expand women’s participation in the electoral process.
At a workshop it organised in Abuja yesterday, the commission sought to identify and reflect on practical, effective and implementable ways females could participate in the nation’s politics.

Recognising that the electorate consists of diverse people with special abilities, the commission is keen in ensuring that inclusivity and participation are integral parts of its policies.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, said at the event themed ‘INEC’s Role in ensuring Women Participation in the Electoral Process’, that the commission was committed to continually improving on the electoral process.

Such a position, he noted, was also indicative of INEC’s commitment to the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria.

According to him, bringing together female politicians, academics and civil society activists across all social and political divides indicates that the workshop is a further affirmation of INEC’s unflinching commitment towards deepening participation and expanding inclusivity in its electoral process.

President Muhamadu Buhari has urged Nigerian lawyers to work for national cohesion and unity.

He said this on Sunday in his address at the 2018 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja.

Buhari expressed hope that the conference would consolidate the position of the NBA as a prime stakeholder in the national affairs.

Excerpts of his speech below:

“As you will recall, this administration’s emergence marked the first successful civilian transition in Nigeria’s democratic history, following the outcome of the 2015 General Elections.

“Given the enormity of the challenges we inherited and the yearnings of a citizenry earnestly desirous of a new way of running national affairs, our first challenge was to transform our country speedily into a society where impunity in the management of national resources would be replaced with a culture of accountability and transparency. We needed to deploy our resources to address our common needs rather than the greed of a callous few.

“In order to achieve this, we have had to disrupt age-old assumptions and unsettle ancient norms in the management of our national patrimony, as you have all witnessed in the last three years.

“While we have made appreciable progress in several sectors, including public awareness of the need to challenge the corrupt and the brazen in our midst, we have also learnt useful lessons on the dynamism of our society. However, elements within every society, including some lawyers, can equally become unduly resistant to change, even where it is proven that such change is to serve the interest of the larger society. At worst, corruption fights back.

“As we gradually move into another season of intense political activities preparatory to the 2019 General Elections, I enjoin you to remember that by reason of your profession, you all have a responsibility to work for national cohesion and unity through your speeches and public positions and most importantly in your advocacy in court.

“In the context of opinions and narratives about our past and present political and socio-economic experience, you cannot afford to jettison rational and proper analysis of issues in a manner which builds, rather than destroys the nation. I also urge you to work to uphold and improve the sanctity and integrity of our judicial and electoral institutions which play a fundamental role in the sustenance and growth of our democracy.

“Through fiscal discipline, good housekeeping, we navigated the difficult days of economic transformation at the beginning of this Government in 2015 and have now come to improving economic indices, including the consistent increase in our foreign reserves; thirteen straight months of decreasing inflation; the expansion of social safety nets programmes as well as the blockages of historical drain pipes in our national treasury, all within the context of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

“It is equally significant to emphasize that our willingness to hold persons accountable for offences against society, through the judicial process, will equally transform the future of public service in Nigeria in a positive manner.

“I believe that lawyers can contribute to another core objective of enhancing our business environment and promoting social justice by promoting respect for the Rule of Law; contributing to the law reform process and putting national interest and professional ethics above self in the conduct of their business.

“Rule of Law must be subject to the supremacy of the nation’s security and national interest. Our apex court has had cause to adopt a position on this issue in this regard and it is now a matter of judicial recognition that; where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society.

“I trust that this Conference will achieve tremendous success and I urge you all to participate actively in its various intellectual and social activities in order to build new bonds and strengthen old relationships. I congratulate the incoming National Executive of the NBA led by Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, and wish them a successful tenure in the task of advancing legal practice in Nigeria.”

A fire early Saturday at a hotel in China has left at least 18 people dead and 19 injured, according to state media.

The blaze broke out during the night at the hotel in Harbin, capital of the northeastern Heilongjiang province, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

“By the latest count, 18 people have been found dead and 19 have been taken to the hospital,” the agency said, citing local authorities.

Images of the gutted hotel and spa appeared on state broadcaster CCTV, showing blackened walls, twisted metal structures and parts of the ceiling hanging precariously.

Those hospitalised had inhaled toxic smoke or suffered burns, CCTV said, adding that an investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.

Deadly fires are common in China, where fire security regulations are routinely neglected.

In April, 18 people were killed and five more injured in a fire at a karaoke establishment in the country’s south.

In November, a fire left 19 people dead and eight injured at a boarding house in Beijing. And in May 2015, 38 people were found dead in a fire at a retirement home in central Henan province.

Alia Ghanem, the mother of deceased al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden has said that her son was ‘brainwashed’ into extremist ideology.

Speaking at her family’s home in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ghanem told the Guardian newspaper, that bin Laden was a shy, academically capable boy, who turned into a strong, pious figure while an economics student in Jeddah in his early 20s.

“The people at university changed him.

“He became a different man,’’ she told the newspaper, which said bin Laden had met Abdullah Azzam, a Muslim Brotherhood member, who became his spiritual adviser, at the university.

“He was a very good child until he met some people, who pretty much brainwashed him in his early 20s.

“You can call it a cult; they got money for their cause.

“I would always tell him to stay away from them and he would never admit to me what he was doing because he loved me so much,’’ she said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday commenced sale of foreign exchange in Chinese Yuan (CNY).

The exercise marks the formal take-off of the Bilateral Currency Swap Agreement (BCSA) the bank signed on April 27, 2018 with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC).

A statement by the CBN spokesperson, Isaac Okorafor, sent to PREMIUM TIMES said the sale shall be through a combination of spot and short-tenored requests.

Mr Okorafor said the Special Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) retail would be dedicated to the payment of Renminbi denominated Letters of Credit (LCs) for raw materials and machinery and agriculture only. He said the CBN would receive bids from all authorised dealers.

Due to the peculiarity of the sale, Mr Okorafor said the bank would not be applying the relevant provisions of its revised guidelines for the operation of the inter-bank foreign exchange market.
The guidelines direct all SMIS bids to be submitted to the CBN through the Forex Primary Dealers (FXPDs).

Besides, Mr Okorafor said, the CBN would also not be applying the relevant provisions of the guidelines which equally provide that “Spot FX sold to any particular end-user shall not exceed one per cent of the overall available funds on offer at each SMIS session.”
On the bid period, he said authorised dealers were requested to submit their customers’ bids from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. on Friday.

Bids received after the deadline would be disqualified.
On funding, he said authorised dealers were to debit the customers’ accounts for the Naira equivalent of their bids.
On the other hand, the CBN would debit authorised dealers’ current account on the day of intervention with the Naira equivalent of their bid request.

Mr Okorafor further explained there would be no predetermined spread on the sale of FX Forwards by Authorised Dealers to end-users under the Special SMIS-Retail.

He said authorised dealers would be allowed to earn 50 kobo on the customers’ bids.The bids, the CBN spokesperson said, were on Spot FX basis as the authorised dealers’ accounts with the CBN would be debited in full for the Naira equivalent of the dollar bid amount.

Customers that were not willing to accept the settlement terms were advised not to participate in this Special SMIS – Retail. Similarly, he said, forward bids would be settled through a multiple-price book building process to be cut-off at a marginal rate to be disclosed after the conclusion of the Special SMIS–Retail process.

“Customers not willing to accept the terms of the forward rate are not to participate in this Special Chinese Yuan SMIS Intervention,” he said.

“CBN reserves the right not to make a sale if it has the impression the exercise did not provide an effective price for the determination of the CNY/NGN exchange rate.”

A Federal High Court, sitting in Osogbo, Osun state capital has ordered the National Assembly to immediately commence impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari.

The judge gave the order on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 based on the suit filed by two Nigerians, Kanmi Ajibola, a lawyer and Sulaiman Adeniyi, a human right activist, urging the court to enforce the National Assembly to impeach President Buhari.

The duo had three months ago written to both the lower and the upper chambers of the National Assembly on the need to impeach President Buhari, citing alleged constitutional breaches by the president and threatened that they will approach the court if they failed to act accordingly.

But when the lawmakers refused, they headed for court and filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Osogbo asking for an order of mandamus to compel both the Senate and the House of Representatives to start the impeachment proceedings of President Buhari.

In the suit filed on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, they hinged their arguments on four grounds on why the National Assembly should impeach the Buhari.

In the motion ex-parte, the duo claimed that in flagrant violation of the 1999 constitution, President Buhari contested election, won and was sworn in as the president on the 29th day of May 2015 without possessing the basic constitutional requirement, which would have made him qualified for the contest of the election.

They further alleged that the 4th respondent, which is President Buhari in flagrant violation of section 137 (1) (j) of the 1999 constitution presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the purpose of the 2015 presidential election that brought him to the office of the president.

“In the light of the 4th Respondent’s placement to continue in the office as the president, he has no certificate and basic requirement upon which this placement to continue in the office can be placed.”

Besides, they accused the president of treating the orders of the court with great disdain and abuses the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at will, particularly from the angle of the observance of the Federal character as contained in section 14 of the constitution.

“The 4th Respondent on the 29th day of May 2015, took an oath of office, among others, to the effect that, he would rule in accordance to and protect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly section 14 (2) (b) which stipulates that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.”

“In the contrary, the 4th Respondent has proved to be unable to guarantee the security of lives and properties of the citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in fulfilment of his oath of Office. The herdsmen killings of the innocent citizens under the 4th Respondent have been uncountable, unbearable and unprecedented overheating figures in the globe.

“The 4th Respondent in contravention of the due process and sections 80 and 81 of the 1999 constitution spent about $496 Million on the purchase of Tucano Jets without the approval of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as required by the law.

“The 4th Respondent ordered to be withdrawn, money from the public fund of the Federation without the approval of the National Assembly or the authorization of its act and same used for the purchase of Tucano Jets.

“The 4th Respondent has committed several impeachable offences, that is, gross misconduct.
“By the provision of section 143 of the 1999 constitution, the 1st to 3rd Respondents (The Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly) have the statutory duty to impeach the 4th Respondent as the president and Commander in – Chief of Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on gross misconduct.

“The 1st to 3rd Respondents have closed their eyes to the gross misconduct of the 4th Respondent.
They told the court that as applicants in the matter, they have the right and duty to compel the 1st and 3rd Respondents to perform their statutory duty of impeachment against the 4th Respondent, having bothered on the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Citing several constitutional authorities in the written address in support of the motion ex-parte and with 44-paragraph affidavits, the duo posed some questions by putting Nigeria side by side with some developed nations.

“Can the conduct of the 4th Respondent, particularly on the presentation of a forged certificate, be condone in America or Great Britain unchecked?

“Can the 4th Respondent continue to benefits from his act of forgery and infraction of constitution?
“Definitely, an American president cannot be genuinely accused of presentation of a forged certificate and still be allowed to continue as the president, likewise the prime minister of the Great Britain”, they noted.

Barrister Ajibola urged the court that with all array of documents before the court, he was of the view that the National Assembly must perform its constitutional duties without fear or favour.

Justice Onyetenu in her ruling granted the application and ordered “that the National Assembly being the 1st,2nd and 3rd respondents commence the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari”.
Further hearing on the matter has been fixed for October 30, 2018.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, says Nigerians have more electricity than they can consume.

He said this while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday.
He said the current Federal Government is building infrastructure across the country, and every state has at least two federal roads currently in construction.

“We have more electricity that cannot be consumed, 2,000 megawatts of electricity that nobody is taking. By the year ending, we are going to hit 10,000 megawatts from the 2,600 that we inherited.” he said.

He also said that the war against corruption led by the President was attracting lots of attacks from those who benefitted from the old system of things.

“As I speak to you now, two former state governors are in jail; a lot of people thought that this war against corruption is a joke and that the back-and-forth that had characterized this over time, will continue,” he said.

“One of the two cases was determined after 11 years of back-and-forth between lawyers and judges, kicking the ball from this court to that court. A lot of these harsh attacks against the President are coming from people who had become used to lifestyle they cannot sustain.

“On record, there were people in this country, because they are influential, they had permanent suites in major hotels in Abuja where they lived lavishly at the public’s expense. And, when they are leaving, they are accompanied with bags of Ghana-Must-Go. They will continue to fight the president, but the happiness we have is that ordinary low- level Nigerians understand the huge conspiracy.”

He then assured the public that the President would continue to develop the economy of the country despite these “attacks”.
“Nigerians are with the President, the elite are going to places, America and the United Kingdom, and they are clicking in posh homes in Abuja, Lagos and some major cities in the country. They are trying to thwart the goodwill of the president towards the people. But this economy is being re-built; more foreign investment is coming, more infrastructure is being given to Nigerians and even the security infrastructure which had suffered neglect over the years is being given priority,” he said.

He added that no government in the past did as much for the military and the police as the current administration is doing.

Matt Cappotelli, a professional American wrestler who was diagnosed with brain tumour back in 2005 has lost his battle to the killer disease exactly a year after he went under the knife for a life-saving brain surgery.

His beautiful wife, Lindsay who announced his death on Facebook said he died around 3:30am on Friday the 29th of June 2018.
WWE also confirmed the death of the Pro Wrestler in a tweet few hours ago.

Although his brain tumour was removed after his wrestling career ended following the diagnosis in 2005, he continued to undergo screenings.

Last year June, he started to experience seizure and migraine headaches.
This prompted his doctors to do another scan where it was discovered that the tumour had returned.
His surgeon managed to removed 90% of the tumour in December 2017.

He was hospitalised shortly after the surgery and in May 2018, he was hospitalised again.
Despite his troubles, Matt maintained a positive attitude until he passed away in the early hours of Friday.

The vehicles caught in the petrol tanker fire on the Otedola bridge in Lagos At press time, 10 bodies burnt beyond recognition had been recovered.

It was gathered that the tragedy occurred at about 6.05 p.m, after the fuel-laden tanker, which was heading inwards Berger, had a brake failure.

While the driver was trying to control the tanker, it reportedly rammed into one of the vehicles and exploded.

An eyewitness, Maria Oje, described her escape as the handiwork of God. She narrated, in tears, how she saw some motorists’ failed attempt to run for safety.

Her words: “One of them, who was on fire, fell down, as he could not run any longer. Nobody could rescue them as everyone was also running for dear life.”
Some motorists abandoned their vehicles and fled in different directions.

Family members were said to be looking for their relatives, after escaping. Among them was a woman, who was sighted crying in search of her twin girls.

At press time, thick smoke was still billowing from the scene, with rescue operators battling to contain the situation.

Those present at the scene included the Police, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA; Lagos State Fire Service; the state’s Ambulance Service; Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, among others.

Vehicles were stopped on both sides of the road, as rescue operation continued. This caused a traffic gridlock, which stretched to the Third Mainland Bridge.

Efforts to reach the spokespersons of LASEMA and Fire Service proved abortive.

However, Lagos State Police spokesman, Chief Superintendent Chike Oti, who answered a call to his phone, said: “67 cars were affected and 10 charred remains of victims were recovered."

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, commiserates with families of the affected persons and sends his heart-felt condolences to them.”

“He warned all tanker drivers to put security measures in place to check recurrence.”

According to LASEMA, the accident occurred when a Mark tanker truck loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) fell and spilled it's content on the road resulting into a fire outbreak.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that the accident was due to a break failure.

'I finished my National Diploma but there was no work. Then, i learnt photography but still there was no money to buy a camera. I did different odd jobs like BRT, sales girl, ticketing and more.

I eventually left Nigeria in April 2018. I was told by a certain woman that there was work in South Africa and that she would settle my travel experiences. One night, in the room where 8 of us slept, Asthma boys broke into our room and gang raped us. This incident is one of the most traumatising in my life.
This happened at the end of April. I haven't seen my period since then.

I have been in and out of about 4 prisons in Libya.
Eventually my boga (smuggler) had to send N700,000 naira for my release.
I didn’t know it was Libya. I have been seeing girls talk about their experience in Libya. I didn't know i would end up like them. If i had known, i would never have embarked on the journey.

The World Bank has announced the approval of $2.1bn loan for seven projects to be executed in Nigeria.

A statement issued in Abuja on Thursday said the loans were approved in Washington on Wednesday and are for seven projects to support Nigeria’s investment in nutrition, access to electricity, states’ fiscal transparency, polio eradication, women’s economic empowerment, public finance and national statistics and reducing vulnerability to soil erosion.

World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Rachid Benmessaoud, was quoted to have said, “The Federal Government of Nigeria’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan identifies human capital investment, restoring growth, and building a competitive economy as its key pillars."

The projects approved by the International Development Association, the bank’s low-interest arm, are expected to support Nigeria’s economic growth plan.

Growth rates in Nigeria have bounced back since the third quarter of 2016, when a recession, its first in 25 years, bottomed out. Growth returned largely due to higher oil prices, with the country relying on crude sales for much of its revenue.
However, growth slowed again in the first quarter of 2018, as the country’s non-oil sector struggled.
The government expects growth to rise to a pre-recession level of 7 percent by 2020.

The World Bank said more than half of the loans would be used to fund power and climate change projects and boost fiscal transparency. It also approved a $7 million grant for nutrition.
Nigeria privatised most of its power sector in 2013 but retained control of its dilapidated monopoly transmission grid, often blamed for hobbling growth.

The country intends to raise $2.8 billion of debt offshore to help part-finance its 2018 budget and plans to explore all options to lower costs, the debt office head told Reuters.
The debt office said it could tap capital markets or concessionary loans from the World Bank after the 2018 budget had been approved.

Nigeria has overtaken India's the country with the largest number of people living in extreme poverty, a new report by the World Poverty Clock has said.
According to the report, extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute, the highest number in the world. India on the other hand, is witnessing a decline in its level of extreme poverty.
At the end of May (2018), the survey showed that Nigeria had an estimated 87 million people in extreme poverty, comparedto India’s 73 million.

The report further stated that in Africa, D.R Congo may soon overtake India as number two, while Africa may be home to additional 3.2 million people living in extreme poverty by the end of 2018.

With the report, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to end extreme poverty by 2030 may be unattainable even as Africa faces major population increase.
According to the UN, By 2050 around 2.2 billion people could be added to the global population and more than half of that growth will come from Africa.

It also predicts that Nigeria will become the world’s third largest country by then.
The World Poverty Clock report further states that of the 10 countries on this extreme poverty list, only Ethiopia is on track to meet the United Nations’ SDG of ending extreme poverty by 2030.
It also says outside the top 10, only Ghana and Mauritania are on track with the target.

Nigeria leads with 86.9 million people and is closely followed by India with 73 million and D.R Congo with 60.9 million people.
Ethiopia is next with 23.9 million people, followed by Tanzania with 19.9 million.

The least four are Uganda, South Africa, South Sudan and Zambia with 14.2, 13.8, 11.4 and 9.5 million people respectively.

AC Milan will not be able to take part in European competition for one season after being served a ban by UEFA for failing to complay with Financial Fair Play regulations, European football's governing body announced in a statement on their official web site this afternoon.

AC Milan have been banned from participating in European competition next season due to a contravention of Financial Fair Play, UEFA have confirmed.

The Rossoneri finished in sixth in last season's Serie A campaign, gaining a spot in the Europa League group stage for 2018-19.
But according to UEFA, the Italians have fallen foul of FFP laws and will not be able to take up their spot.

Milan will have the right to appeal, but if that is unsuccessful they will be expelled from the 2018-19 Europa League, although they would be eligible to enter again in 2019-20 if they qualify for either the Champions or Europa League.

A statement read: "The Adjudicatory Chamber of the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), chaired by Jose Narciso da Cunha Rodrigues, has taken a decision in the case of the club AC Milan that had been referred to it by the CFCB Chief Investigator for the breach of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations, in particular the break-even requirement.

"The club is excluded from participating in the next UEFA club competition for which it would otherwise qualify in the next two (2) seasons (i.e. one competition in 2018/19 or 2019/20, subject to qualification).

"This decision may be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in accordance with Article 34(2) of the Procedural rules governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body, as well as Articles 62 and 63 of the UEFA Statutes.
"Atalanta will qualify straight to the group phase. Fiorentina will enter the preliminary round."
Milan returned to European competition after an absence of three years in 2017-18, reaching the last 16 of the Europa League before going out to eventual finalists Arsenal.
